Department Chair/Clinical Activities

Advances the education, research, and clinical missions of the academic medical center in all areas of Neurology in collaboration with the leadership of CUSM. Facilitates and supports the training of the next generation of scientists and physicians who will further advance Neurology practice and science. Champions improvements in education of medical students and residents in the Department of Neurology.

Defines and leads the department research strategy by expanding clinical, translational and basic research. Supports principal investigators and other faculty within the school in efforts to secure appropriate grant funding (including NIH) and philanthropy to support research/academic priorities.

Provides the vision and leadership to achieve superior clinical programs for Neurology. Works with the leadership at CUSM and with community partners to build and grow areas of acknowledged clinical excellence. Serves on committees, study sections, and review groups as a journal editor and/or on editorial boards. Commits to service within the community.

Teaching, Curriculum, and Student Engagement

Builds strong relationships with others in an environment where the other health sciences schools and the hospital are partners and where Neurology must collaborate with other departments to ensure mutual achievement.

Acts as mentor to students, fosters the success of students, encourage academic excellence, engagement, personal growth, and development of students. Assists students to optimize an educational experience, assists the student's socialization into a disciplinary culture, provides support to students in managing the rigors of medical school.

Commits to and actively participates in undergraduate and graduate Neurology education.

Contributes to curriculum development, teaching and research activities in various and specific disciplines.

Contributes defined hours for teaching load and student engagement within the department.

Maintains office hours for students.

Budget and Resource Development

Provides a strong and impassioned vision for building excellence in all aspects of the clinical and academic mission. Understand, appreciate, and prepare for current and future trends in the field of neurology.

Prepares, oversees and implements Neurology departmental budget that encompasses all funding sources and ensures compliance with grant, legislative and institutional guidelines. Effectively work to manage available resources.

Encourages ethical and financial practices within the Department of Neurology. Supports all institutional compliance activities. Ensures compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.

Recruits, hires and retains outstanding, diverse faculty. Identifies, recruits and retains the next generation of superior faculty members. Ensures an atmosphere of support and development.

Encourages philanthropic gifts. Acts as a highly visible collaborative leader in supporting CUSM strategic direction in partnership with departmental chairs, academic affairs, and research leadership.

Communicates effectively with dean, faculty, and staff.

Applies knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of current policies, procedures, and regulations.

Demonstrates and promotes interest in continuous professional development as demonstrated in research publications and/or attending and providing training sessions.

Minimum Requirement


MD, post graduate work in neurology, board eligible, California license (or ability to obtain quickly) and a proven record of learning and teaching at an LCME-accredited medical school; AND, five years of experience in higher education administration and leadership.


Experience with college/university personnel, policies, and procedures, as well as current trends in higher education. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in program planning, project management, and academic administration; evidence of successful collaboration, and interdisciplinary work.

Ability to supervise, advise, training and assess faculty members and students; including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling assignments. Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.


Demonstrated skill in working independently and completing assignments according to defined goals and objectives. Ability to effectively prioritize and deliver assignments under pressure of deadlines, and with frequent interruptions and competing priorities. Must be able to adjust priorities quickly, multitask with excellent organizational skills. Demonstrated experience in a fast paced, high volume environment.


Demonstrated high attention to detail. Demonstrated skill in analyzing information to define and follow up on problems or objectives. Can identify solutions and independently act toward solving problems.


Demonstrated proficient skill in effectively using a computer and applications such as Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point).


Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time and use computer; stand, walk, bend, intermittently throughout the day. Ability to work in a university environment; moderate changes in temperature and noise.


Must successfully complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen/physical and background check through the Department of Justice.
