The Project Manager - based within the Department of Health Law, Policy, and Management and within the BU Medicaid Policy Lab - will lead project management and coordination activities across a portfolio of academic research projects and grants that are funded by the NIH and private foundations. Research projects topically focus on how health care policies and health care delivery models impact quality of care, access to care, and equity of care for marginalized populations, often using large datasets. Maternal health and mental health are two key areas of focus. The Project Manager will work with multidisciplinary research teams made up of clinicians, health services researchers, health economists, social epidemiologists, and biostatisticians from Boston University and Boston Medical Center (BMC), in collaboration with health system partners from across the country and state.

Project Manager responsibilities include the following:
  • Coordination of key research project tasks (30%): This includes leading key administrative tasks, such meeting scheduling, meeting minute documentation, project document organization, and creating or updating internal project websites; managing research project email accounts, including scheduling and recruiting interview participants for qualitative interviews; and submitting and maintaining IRB approval for research projects.
  • Management of project teams (20%): This includes coordinating weekly or biweekly tasks of project staff across multiple study teams; helping to facilitate team meetings.
  • Management of relationships and communications with key external partners (20%): This includes managing relationships, communications, and meetings with key partners (e.g., health systems, state Medicaid agencies, national associations). Engagement with partners will occur during grant application phase and throughout the duration of research projects as to obtain stakeholder input and as a means of disseminating results.
  • Other research support (10%): This includes assisting with manuscript preparation and submission, such as literature searches, documentation of references, formatting. It also may include systematic documentation of health policies through website searches
  • Support of grant management tasks (10%): This includes assisting with grant application preparation and grant reporting requirements. Grants are funded by the NIH and private foundations.
  • Management and coordination of data use agreements and other inter-organizational agreements (10%): This includes submitting, maintaining, and coordinating data requests, data use agreements (DUAs), and project approvals with CMS, state entities, and health systems partners. It also includes ensuring continued compliance with all DUAs, contracts, and inter-organization agreements.


Required Skills

  • Experience managing or coordinating academic research projects
  • Experience managing or coordinating tasks across team members
  • Experience working in a health- or health policy-focused department, organization, or setting
  • Interest or knowledge in at least one of the following: health policy, Medicaid policy, maternal health, quality of care, equity of care, value-based payment models
  • Knowledge of IRB processes and requirements
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work well independently, while also working well with teams
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks and efficiently manage time
  • Bachelor's degree (BA, BS)

Preferred Skills
  • 5+ years of professional experience
  • Master's degree (MPH, MBA, MHA, or equivalent) in management, health care management or administration, health policy, or any related field
  • Experience managing or coordinating health care data
  • Experience working with health care leadership
  • Knowledge of NIH grant application processes and grant management requirements
