About the Position:
The Academic Advising Center is the home for Undergraduate General Education Advising and for undeclared students. Our mission is to work in a collaborative partnership with students, a shared responsibility, where the advisor and student are equally invested in the educational process and holistic development of the student. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the College Advisor, Health and Human Development (Student Services Professional II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.
Under the direction of the College Associate Dean and as a member of the advising teams, works to support students in timely progress toward their degree. Works as a member of the Health and Human Development (HHD) Student Success Team to develop and implement effective advising systems, including: reviewing records of students to ensure they are taking the appropriate courses for their major and career/graduate school goals; reviewing graduation date selection and conducting graduation checks to prevent unnecessary graduation date deferrals and approving graduation applications; assisting students in identifying and declaring majors and minors; and supporting onboarding of students during orientation. Has access to and maintains a student tracking database and utilizes campus advising and data analytic tools to support advising efforts. Is involved in developing initiatives/strategies to enhance student success. Provides reports on students supported, challenges experienced, and overall outcomes to the Associate Dean and department chairs. Assists the Student Success Team and departments in developing, implementing, and assessing programs and campaigns designed to increase retention and facilitate progress toward a degree. Other duties as assigned or needed to support the college and for student population served by the Academic Advisor.
Essential Qualifications:
Bachelors degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public administration, business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or a related field. A masters degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational management, research, and interview techniques. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations, obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews, and advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to reason logically and use initiative in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education or experiences in school counseling, psychology, child development, education, or human services. Experience working in a college or universitys admissions, advising, evaluations, registrar, or other student service-related office. Experience working with diverse student populations. Experience presenting to diverse audiences of varying size. Experience in writing reports. Experience updating websites.
General knowledge of:
Principles of individual and group behaviors.
Research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting information.
Familiarity with organizational structures and personnel issues.
Ability to:
Work with a variety of professional staff, faculty, and students to carry out complex assignments without detailed instructions.
Carry out day-to-day assignment without immediate directions.
Independently plan work, take action, and assist students in solving problems.
Use advanced statistics and research methods to collect, records, and interpret data as it relates to advising methods and the student population.
Use judgment within the area of their expertise to creatively utilize existing procedures and to recommend solutions to problems for which precedents may not exist.
Design, establish, and sustain new programs or initiatives.
Skill in:
Using a personal computer to develop and maintain files.
Utilizing PeopleSoft information systems to evaluate student success and/or roadblocks.
Utilizing computer based and interview information to accurately advise students.
Utilizing advising contracts and petitions.
Analyzing and addressing complex academic needs of students.
Working with a culturally diverse student population as well as awareness of the needs of under-represented, non-traditional, and other student groups.
