Position Summary
The NP/PA will be required to understand the Mission of the University of the Incarnate Word and the School of Osteopathic Medicine. The NP/PA can work as part of a team including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, staff and students in the health professions.

Description of Job Duties
Managing a broad range of responsibilities including support staff and work-study staff and ensuring the scheduling and quality service levels are being met or exceeded.
Oversite of daily operations, workflow, work schedules, timecard monitoring etc. to ensure efficient and effective Health Center performance
Responsible for staff education and onboarding for confidentiality, OSHA safety, FERMA and HIPAA requirements.
Development of policies and procedures for providing high quality care in accordance with American College Health Association (ACHA) and the state and federal laws/standards.
Assists in implementing health education programs for students and staff, updating policies and procedures, writing monthly reports, approval pf purchase orders to $1000.00
Develops and maintains positive relationships throughout the University while upholding UIW and UIWSOM policy.
Educates staff on best practices.
Maintains license, skill set, and CEUs in areas of physical assessment and procedures in care of the adult/college student.
Participates in student orientation programs, international student programs, resident assistants training, professional staff development, and campus committees.
24 hour on-call to resident assistants if needed.
Identifies process improvement opportunities and presents resolutions and recommendations to the Medical Director
Makes recommendation regarding staffing model based on objective scheduling & volume analysis presents to Medical Director for approval
Manages internal budget, reviews expenses, purchases supplies, inventories equipment, medication etc. where appropriate
Assists in the identification and scheduling of local per diems

Patient Care Responsibilities

Description of Job Duties
Using diagnostic reasoning, advanced therapeutic interventions and education as key elements in the direct provision of care using a collaborative model.
Using innovative evidence-based techniques, tools, and methods, providing general medical care and treatment to students and other qualified patients. Both clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners see and treat patients at a level approaching a physicians care.
Using clinical judgment with independent and interdependent decision-making skills, performs physical examinations, and preventive health assessments and formulates differential diagnoses for specific targeted populations and records physical findings.
Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patients clinical problems and health care needs. In accordance with FERMA and HIPAA maintains confidentiality.
Recognizes the heightened need for coordination of care with other health care providers including faculty, students, and community resources, with special attention to the at risk college student, and does so in a supportive and well balanced communication style.
Functions as a consultant, educator, researcher, resource and role model for patients, families, community, nursing personnel and other health care providers.
Evaluates the quality of care rendered; analyzes and promotes system changes to enhance quality of care and organizational effectiveness/efficiency; conducts/utilizes research to promote health and improve health care delivery extending into the community.
Conducts a pharmacologic assessment, including polypharmacy, medication interactions, over the counter or herbal use, and the ability of the patient to obtain and purchase medications and correctly self-administer medications.
Refers patients to a Physician for consultation, or to specialized health resources for treatment.
Recommends adjunct treatments such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or related therapeutic procedures such as Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT) for the patient on an individualized treatment plan.
Promotes, recommends and administers immunizations and appropriate health screenings, with specific attention to:
Nutritional compromise
Substance abuse/use
Abuse or neglect (verbal, physical, sexual)
Suicide/homicide ideations
Develops caring relationships with patients


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing, with some public speaking experience.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Strong computer skills and spreadsheet experience.
Proficient with EMR system and billing.
Demonstrated problem solving capabilities.
Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.

Required Education
Masters Degree (MSN) or Masters level Physician Assistant-Certified Required.

Required Work Experience
At least three years clinical experience in an ambulatory College Health Clinic or similar setting and experience with EMR and billing.

Preferred Qualifications


Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
Licensed and Certified as a Physician Assistant/ Nurse Practioner in the State of Texas required.
Maintains license, skill set, and CEUs in areas of physical assessment and procedures in care of the adult/college student.
Current Certification in Advanced Life Support Required.
Appropriate certifications to write prescriptions in the State of Texas under the authority of the Site Medical Director.

Work Hours
Typically Monday Friday, 8a-5p with occasional evenings and weekends as needed

Physical Demands
This position may require lifting objects not to exceed 25 lbs.; crouching, crawling and standing in a clinical environment. May also require sedentary work in an office environment while completing required administrative duties.
